Villages in the vicinity

Tremolat: 3 miles away; small lovely village bordering the Dordogne river; certainly the first point of contact. Please take the opportunity to walk or drive down to the campground “base nautique” to enjoy the view on the Dordogne. Here you’ll find as well a tennis court for rent and there is plenty of space for a nice pétanque game.

Paunat: Les Bruguettes belongs to the Community of Paunat and is a middle-age Village, embedded in hills with a wonderful romanic abbey, hosting 3 classic concerts in August and a lovely restauran. Paunat is not more than one mile away; so why not trying for a walk.

Limeuil: around 6 miles apart, where the rivers Vezère and Dordogne are joining. It is named the most beautiful village in the region, you’ll pass through it on your way to your shopping in Le Bugues. Take a break for a  coffee or an ice-cream at the riverside of the Dordogne and don’t forget to walk up the steep road to enjoy the panorama from above.

Le Buission-de-Cadouin: the middle-age village is grouped around an old monastery.  The  cloister is a masterpiece of gothic architecture ans is listed as UNESCO world heritage. Nice cafes  to rest and some artists ateliers a invite  for a visit.

Bastide de Montpazier: middle-age  “Bastide” with a beautiful square market place surrounded by a cloister; plenty of nice shops and restaurants; definitively worth a trip; around 13 miles away.

Le Bugue: around 10 miles away and bordering the Vezère; worth a visit, even though a little crowed during the main tourist season.

Sarlat: completely preserved medieval town and pearl of the Perigord. Due to  the distance of around 30 miles you should calculate  a day trip for this visit. It is recommended to take the train from Tremolat or Les Buisson, then you save the trip on a curvy road and can enjoy the beautiful landscape.

Saint-Alvere: also a nice little village nearby and at the foot of a castle ruin. In case of emergency you will find a small grocery store here.

Lalinde: this village located at the end of the Dordogne valley on your way to Boredaux area has a very nice weekly street market and a pleasant market place

Restaurants:

Paunat: Chez Julien; absolute must because of the unique setting, the friendly service and the good local kitchen; important: make a reservation immediately after your arrival 05 53 63 21 08, especially in the evening mostly booked for 1-2 weeks in advance; ideal also times in bad weather inside.

Tremolat: Pizzaria “NULL part ailleurs” rather mixed critics as Pizzas overpriced and at times not the best service. The Bistro en face  is very appealing with typical Perigord food. Tip: next door is the Cafe Les Tartines with reasonably priced snacks and a tasty “Burger de Canard” served at the tables on the market square. Last but not least and actually a must for special occasions is the “Vieux Logis”: it once had the highest score in the Michelin Guide, but now still rated with 1 star. Menus at the high standard with the lunch menu still at a reasonable price; Wines for connaisseurs ranging from 40 up to  2000 EURO.

Saint-Alvère : Small lovely restaurant not opened long ago, called “DIX” under  english-french management; highly recommended.  Please reserve in advance.

Limeuil: Restaurant Bon Acceuil; very reasonably priced and in nice atmosphere on the terrace under the big Glicynia. Down on the shore also a pizzeria “Le Chai” with mixed reviews.

Cadouin: try “Les Terrasses De La Cote Rouge” offering a variety of creative French-Italian food.

Street markets and shopping

Tremolat: you’ll find a bakery in the court behind the cathedral.

Le Bugues: Main hub for shopping is the  huge Intermarché. Here you can find most of what you need for your stay; otherwise there is also a Lidl and an Aldi in Le Buges. For the friends of organic food and a more relaxed and quiet shopping, please visit the health-food supermarket “Les Comptoire de la Bio” next to the Intermarché. And indispensable for all wine connoisseurs:  “La Cave de Julien de Savignac”, a wine cave with a good reputation in the region, where you’ll find a great selection of exceptional French wines. – Best to come to Le Bugue in the early morning or evening hours as during summer cars are cueing up on the narrow street, as well as people in the super-market,  something that might  spoil your well deserved Perigord holiday feeling.

Local street markets: street markets are an absolute must not only for food shopping as regional products are on offer, but also textiles, pottery etc. Important: these markets are only open until 1 pm, then they are cleared away. So skip your breakfast, be early and have your croissant at place. The markets by day and location: Sunday: St. Cyprien (a little further, but rewarding); Monday: St. Alvere (very small but nice); Tuesday: Tremolat (very small); Tuesday and Saturday: Le Bugue (big market, best to be early); Thursday: La Linde (very large and beautiful market); Info also available on: http://www.jours-de-marche.fr/24510-tremolat/.

Sport

Canoeing / kayaking on the Dordogne or the Vezère is a must for everyone equipped with good sun protection. Boats can be hired locally in Tremolat at the “Base nautique de Tremolat” & in Limeul, but also further up the Dordogne. And this is how it works: go to the point of arrival, choose the point where to start from, and then you are carried together with your canoe / kayak up the river for you to paddle down the river. In case of low water levels it is recommended to avoid the Vezère.

Tennis: one court in Tremolat as part of the camping there; however the courts in Le Bugue are in better condition.

Petanque: game at your disposal in the house; nice place to play is down at the campground “Base Nautique” at the river side in Tremolat.

Table tennis: we have a good quality pingpong table at your disposal in Les Bruguettes. Please best bring your own rackets with you.

Table football: as well available at Les Bruguettes.

Golf: around 18 miles away on the road direction Perigueux.

Mini Golf: to be found in Tremolat

Other recommendations

In the Abbey of Paunat three classical concerts with selected young solists take place every August; definitely something to recommend, not only because of the unique ambience, but also because of the quality of the performing artists. This concert series is called Musique en Sol.

Medieval festivals and events take place throughout the summer in the area; Brochures are partially to be found in the hous; to get the latest up-date please ask at the tourist offices in  Limeuil or Le Bugue. The villages around celebrate village festivities (“fête votive”) in summer, where for little money local and simpel food is served at long beer tables, at times accompanied by music and sometimes small fairs.

And not to forget the numerous caves in the region, which are not only of interest for their geological formations, but also in part for the pre-historic drawings.

Le Bugues:  Its attraction is the Aquarium, which is very nice to visit with your children.  Further more you will have a cave Bora-Bahau, situated at the entrance of the village.

Along the Dordogne there are a multitude of castles such as Begnac or Castelnaud that are well worth a visit. And on the occasion of her move to the Pantheon in 2021: visit Joséphine Baker’s castle Château des Milandes.
